The 2ft 10in (88cm) high x 3ft 11in (1.2m) wide commode, with sculptural handles and female mask mounts to the sides, is stamped Sageot and was the work of the Parisian cabinetmaker Nicolas Sageot (1666-1731), a contemporary and sometime collaborator of André-Charles Boulle.

Sageot, who became a master cabinetmaker in Paris in 1706, was one of the few to place a stamp on his furniture, a long time before this was made compulsory in 1751.

The piece found a new home in the house of a French collector, selling for €225,000 (£193,965).
