This Edwardian necklace above, contained in its original heart-shaped box, will be offered for sale at the Charterhouse saleroom on May 16-17 in Sherborne, Dorset.
The unmarked piece is believed to be made from 15ct gold and is set with seed pearls and peridots in the Art Nouveau style.
Inherited ‘some time ago’ by a Somerset-based family and well-preserved, it is estimated at £300-500.
Mourning was big business in the Victorian age. Wealthy families would spend good money following Queen Victoria’s example in arranging lavish funerals and wearing dark clothes during a period of grieving.
For the deepest mourning, black was de rigueur. As time went on, the mourner would move to greys and purples – known as half-mourning.

Antikbar, the vintage poster specialist in west London, will offer a collection of Soviet and Palestinian propaganda posters acquired during trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s-70s. The sale takes place on May 11.
A number of the Soviet posters were sourced in March 1969, when the vendor joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students to Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn. He also requested and received several poster parcels sent to his university from the Soviet authorities.
This 2ft 9in x 23in (86 x 58cm) Soviet Constructivist propaganda poster of Lenin overlooking an electrical installation, above, is a 1969 re-issue of a 1925 poster and was part of an official government series of poster design re-issues.
