Around 80 lots from St Nicholas, a country house built on the site of the 12th century hospital in Richmond, North Yorkshire, will be included in Elstob & Elstob’s sale on September 21-22.

They are being sold by the Yorkshire-born sportsman Keith Schellenberg, who lived at the country house of St Nicholas, from 2001 until its recent sale earlier this year. He bought some of the items when Christie’s South Kensington sold the principal contents of the property in 2001.

The lots range from a pair of 19th century Italian carved wood blackamoors (estimate £4000-6000) to more modestly-priced items such as this 19th century stained and natural bone Barleycorn pattern chess set in a fitted box. Estimate £200-300.

This typical grey wash drawing by Louis Wain – shortly to be the subject of a biopic starring Benedict Cumberbatch – is included in the Charterhouse auction of collectors’ items Sherborne on September 20. Titled Has our mistress been killing birds?, and measuring 12in x 10in (30 x 25cm), it was bought by a descendent of the vendor in 1978 from a dealer in Kent.

The drawing is estimated at £300-500 alongside a group of Louis Wain postcards from the same owner pitched at £100-200.
