Over time, numerous designers were inspired by the ideals and forms of the Bauhaus. A case in point is Karl Dittert (1915-2013). He followed in his mother’s footsteps and trained as a silversmith and engraver.
After the war he came into contact with many of the Bauhaus artists and took up teaching posts at various design schools and academies in south Germany, eventually becoming the first director of a newly established institution in Schwäbisch Gmünd, some 30 miles from Stuttgart.
Alongside his academic activity, Dittert also worked as a freelance designer. Among the objects he created was this four-piece sterling silver and wood coffee service (coffee pot 9in/23cm high) from 1960, which is now being sold by his descendants in a sale at Metz in Heidelberg on October 18-19.
