Wyman’s work in design concept and direction, in Pedro Ramirez Vázquez’s personal office in Mexico City, set a high benchmark for every Olympics games that followed and the images produced are hugely striking more than 50 years later.

Two of these remarkable Mexico 68 posters came up for auction at west London poster specialist Antikbar (20% buyer’s premium inc VAT) on August 3.

The ‘Op Art’ poster printed in 1967 was catalogued as in good condition, folded as issued, small cracks on fold lines and creases. Estimated at £450-900, the 2ft 10in square (86cm) poster sold for £3400.

The flowers image was guided at £150-300 and made £425. In similar condition, this 1968 poster measured 2ft 11in x 3ft (89.5 x 90cm).

Bolivian bonus


Bolivarian games poster – $3200 (£2620) at Swann Galleries.

Rare posters thought to have never been on the market before impressed at Swann (25/20/12% buyer’s premium) in New York on August 7.

The Bolivarian games were initially held in Bogota, Colombia, as part of the city’s 400th anniversary celebration.

The name commemorates Simon Bolivar who led independence movements throughout South America and is revered as a hero in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia. Beginning in 1938, these six countries competed in various sporting events during a two-week competition modelled on the Olympic Games. Eight different designs were created.

Four of these were offered at Swann, all finding buyers. The example here, by Sergio Trujillo Magnenat (1911-99), 3ft 3in x 2ft 3½in (1m x 70cm), was estimated at $2000-3000 and sold for a hammer price of $3200 (£2620).

World Cup winner


1930 World Cup poster – $7000 (£5000) at Poster Auctions International.

A copy of the striking Art Deco poster produced for the first football World Cup sold in a New York auction on June 23.

Poster Auctions International’s (20% buyer’s premium) second sale of the year included Guillermo Laborde’s 1930 1er Campeonato Mundial Football which took premium-inclusive $7000 (£5000) against an estimate of $2500-3000.

The poster of a goalkeeper in full flight promoted the event that was won by the hosts, Uruguay.
