The subdued palette, simple forms and literary subjects catered to the gentry class in China and were in sharp contrast to the richly painted imperial wares fashionable at the time.
This 11½in (29cm) ‘hat stand’ vase decorated with a scholar’s dwelling in a landscape has a Guangxu mark and a sealed inscription.
It formed part of the collection that Prof Conrad Harris formed in the late 1990s to early 2000s, elements of which were sold in 163 lots by Duton’s (20% buyer’s premium) in London on November 19.
Estimated at up to £2000, it took £18,000.
