Complete and well-preserved example of publisher John Bell’s great Poets of Great Britain… collection - $24,000 (£18,460) at Freeman’s.
Complete in their two original travelling library cases resembling folio volumes – “well adapted for travelling in the seat of a post chaise, or for library furniture”, as a contemporary advertisement proclaimed – the 109 volumes issued by the Apollo Press of Edinburgh in the years 1776-82 are, like those cases, bound in contemporary tree calf gilt.
