This patinated and parcel gilt bronze ‘double size’ figure of St George by Sir Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934), pictured top, appears to be unique.
A new discovery, it carries an estimate of £80,000-120,000 at Bonhams’ Fine Decorative Arts 1200-1900 sale in London on December 18. The bronze is a close variant of Gilbert’s design for the statue of St George commissioned for the tomb of the Duke of Clarence in St George’s Chapel.
Gilbert, the premier English sculptor of the day, controversially capitalised on the appeal of the model by accepting commissions to make copies for private clients. A very small number of these, in a variety of media have survived, each measuring 20in (50cm). This bronze statue, however, is 3ft (90cm) high.
Bonhams’ head of European sculpture and works of art, Michael Lake, has identified the work as a commission from John Charles Williams of Werrington Park, Launceston in 1895.

This pair of 23in (57cm) Cotswold School brass fire dogs, c.1900, is attributed to Nelson Dawson and Edward Spencer for the Artificers’ Guild. The foliate fretwork design is based on the 17th century fire dogs at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire.
