This 8 x 10in (20 x 25cm) oil on paper sketch of East Bergholt Common by John Constable (1776-1837) depicts a view close to the Constable family home.

It was painted c.1810 during his long courtship with his neighbour Maria Bicknell and looks directly at the fields between the two homes where many of their first meetings took place. It comes up at Bonhams’ Old Master Paintings sale on December 17 from a vendor from outside the EU who bought it at the Salander O’Reilly Gallery, New York in 1988.

The estimate is £80,000-120,000.
