The square-shaped coolers, which stand 7¼in (18.5cm) high and have lion masks at the angles and paw feet, were consigned by an international collector and had a July 1977 provenance to the New York silver dealer SJ Shrubsole.

Offered at Doyle with a modest $600-800 estimate at the auction on June 11, the pair ended up selling for $8500 (£6745).
