Stylistically it has little connection to any of the other works by the artist Lyonel Feininger, who is known for his work at the Bauhaus and in particular for his geometric landscapes and architectural motifs.

The 5 x 7in (12 x 19cm) drawing was executed c.1901, at which time Feininger was working as a cartoonist and illustrator for newspapers. He only took up painting in oil later, at the age of 36, in 1908.

As the dedication shows, this drawing was a present from Feininger to his artist friend Karl Peter Röhl, a pupil at the Bauhaus and an important figure in the DADA art movement. Previously owned by a German and a Swiss collector, it is estimated at €12,000-15,000.
