1. Frederick John Widgery (1861- 1942) was both a West Country artist and a civic figure. He became mayor of Exeter in 1903 and the city and the surrounding countryside feature predominantly in his work. Two gouaches on paper that were offered as a single lot at Bristol Auction Rooms on July 16 were fairly typical. Arins Tor Dartmoor and The East Okement, Okehampton, Devon (shown here) both measured 15¾ x 19¼in (40 x 49cm) and were estimated at £80-120.
2. Ralph Brown (1928-2013) was an artist and sculptor who studied at the Leeds School of Art from 1948-51. His figurative sculptures in particular came to prominence in the late 1950s-60s but offered at Bishop & Miller on June 12 was a later pencil and wash drawing from 1985 estimated at £60-90. Girl in a Blue Dress was a signed work on paper with a label for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1987 on the back.
3. Scottish artist Tom Scott (1859-1927) was a watercolour specialist whose main subject matter was the scenic landscape around Selkirk and the Scottish borders where he lived for his entire life. This 11 x 14in (28 x 34cm) signed watercolour depicting a ford near the village of Newcastleton was dated April 1914 and was offered at Lyon & Turnbull on July 15.
