Although now two centuries old, the subject of The Law Suit depicts a familiar scenario perfectly: two gentleman play tug of war over a cow while a lawyer, sat between them, milks it.

At McTear’s (24% buyer’s premium) in Glasgow on July 16, it sold online at £1500 (estimate £80-120).

Meet the Bastows

Leeds Pottery creamware charger – £1050 at Canterbury Auction Galleries.

Among the pottery highlights at the Canterbury Auction Galleries (30% buyer’s premium) on August 1-2 was the Leeds Pottery creamware charger pictured above.

Possibly by the Humble, Hartley, Greens & Co factory, the decoration marks the marriage of Jonathan and Betty Bastow 1780.

The names inscribed to most pieces of 18th century English pottery are destined to be forgotten. However, on this occasion, a handwritten label pasted on the reverse lists the Bastows’ seven children and dates of birth.

It added to the appeal of a piece sold to an Oxfordshire phone bidder at £1050.
