Such baskets started to become popular in the early 20th century. These examples, which measure between 3½ and 4in (9 and 10cm) in width, each have a different animal carved in walrus ivory to the lid: a polar bear, a walrus head and a seal.

Another of the top lots on July 22, this time selling within its $2000-3000 guide at $2100 (£1615), was a 17in (43cm) carved wood, shell and bone inlaid bowl in the form of a seal from the Northwest coast region (Tlingit or Haida) dated to c.1900.
