Guided at £100-200, the group were reputed to have come from a ‘classical villa in the south-west’ and comprised one large 2ft x 6ft 6in (62cm x 2m) frame of two mosaics and two more decorative and smaller square pieces in 2ft x 2ft 2in (61 x 68cm) frames. They sold via thesaleroom.com.

Toby Pinn at Clevedon Salerooms said: “There was discussion from bidders as to how much was original (Roman) and how much was embellishment to make decorative panels.”

He added it had also been suggested the ‘classical villa’ might have been Kings Weston Roman Villa in Bristol but this was ruled out by the Bristol Museum Archaeology department before the sale.
