The proceeds will go to organisations that they both supported, said the auction house, David Lay (18% buyer’s premium) of Penzance, among them the English National Ballet and the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

Among the more expensive of the letters offered on March 17, at £7200, was one of October 1995 (above) in which Diana thanks Bramble, then Lord High Sheriff of Westminster, for a lunch at Bibendum in Chelsea and hopes that she hadn’t delayed him too much for an official meeting with the Queen.

“I just hope your arrival at Westminster was before the Boss, and if not, I expect to have been mentioned in the excuses.”
