Measuring 6ft 10in (2.1m) high, each of the 3ft (53cm) wide panels was glazed and mounted with mostly 18th century printed views of London.

Some degree of mildew, foxing and losses to the prints and the frames was evident and the auction house had guided the screen, which it described as probably late 19th century, at $1200-1800.

However, enough interest emerged on the day in the sale of Furniture and Decorative Arts and Old Master Paintings to take the final price to $8500 (£6295).

The portrait of Rear Admiral John Sprat Ranier in naval uniform by John Hoppner (1758-1810) which featured in the Old Masters section of the sale and was previewed in ATG No 2476, sold within estimate at $9000 (£6670).
