On January 23 in Bordeaux, where Marquet was born, Briscadieu (23% buyer’s premium) held a sale devoted to Bordelaise painting that included Marquet’s 1935 view of the Bassin D’Arcachon, jardin au Pyla.

The 13 x 16in (33 x 41cm) oil on panel from 1935 was signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse Jardin Pyla 23 11C and dated 35. The painting had a provenance to Marcelle Marquet then Katia Granoff via an exchange in 1948. Estimated at €50,000-70,000, it ended up selling for €115,000 (£104,545).

Danube at Drouot

In a Paris sale at Drouot held by Doutrebente (20% buyer’s premium) the day before, Marquet’s view of the Danube at Sulina painted c.1931-33 sold for €75,000 (£68,180) against a guide of €60,000-80,000.

The 19½in x 2ft (50 x 61cm) oil on canvas, which was signed lower left, depicted the small town at the mouth of the river in Romania where the artist travelled with his wife in 1933.
