The Dorset town of Sherborne has many attractions: Tudor gateways, medieval almshouses and Georgian townhouses all dominated by the 15th century abbey.
Not to mention the auctions on offer at the Charterhouse saleroom, and plenty of art and antiques independents here including antiques shops and galleries.
Now comes another draw: decoratives dealer Craig Wharton has teamed up with former Duke’s Fine Art auctioneer and furniture restorer Phillip Travers to open the Sherborne Antiques Market which launches on Saturday, July 31.
Prime location
Wharton says: “Having moved to Sherborne last year, a place we love, we saw an opportunity to develop the boarded-up Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop into an antiques market, which is in a prime location in the centre of the historic high street.
“There is Charterhouse nearby, plus the town is a buzzy mecca for antiques shops including Macintosh Antiques who have been so supportive of our venture. The market will have 40-plus dealers with a wide range of specialisms including antique furniture, vintage clothing, coins, paintings and interiors.
“We have been talking to younger dealers who have so much to offer but can’t find the right place to sell their items. We will be offering smaller and affordable areas to encourage the next generation of dealers.”
