The painting came from the studio of Napoleon’s favourite portrait painter François Gérard (1770-1837) and is a bust-length version of the artist’s official full-length portrait of Napoleon commissioned in 1804.
The work sold on the virtual stand of Imperial Art to a private collection in Switzerland with an asking price of £180,000.
Other sales included a Bridget Riley (b.1931) gouache titled Greens & Blues with Red, Orange Contrasts (1985) at Osborne Samuel for just under £100,000 to a private collector. A two-seater highback sofa by Danish designer Frits Henningsen (1889-1965) from Modernity went to a private collection in London priced at £70,000.
