An example of what was also certainly a contender for the title of earliest-known geographic board game sold for $8500 (£6160) at PBA Galleries (20% buyer’s premium) in San Francisco on April 1.

PBA had hoped for more, but while undoubtedly a great rarity, this example lacked the teetotum, or special dice, along with players’ tokens.

The rules were tough. The 139 numbered stops marked on the map have to be named from a list of options given in the text below, but not only are players penalised for failing to know where they have landed, they are asked to state the town or city’s population!
