In fact, guinea pigs were a something of a favourite for the court painter to the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I and feature in a number of his still-lifes, although only a couple with this subject have seemingly sold at auction in the last 20 years.
This 15¾ x 18in (40 x 46cm) oil on canvas is signed and dated 1715 on the stone ledge and is estimated at £2000-3000 at Cheffins of Cambridge on June 30-July 1.
