Of this group, only two remain in private hands with the others in museums including the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the National Gallery of Canada.
As with the other works in the series, Purfleet and the Essex Shore as seen from Long Reach, a 2ft 11in x 3ft 11in (90cm x 1.2m) oil on canvas (above) reflects the profound influence on Turner’s work of the great Dutch masters. It has not been seen in public since it was purchased by the vendor’s father in 1945.

Triple Emma Hamilton
An unusual triple portrait of Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765- 1815).
The Sotheby’s Old Master sale will also feature an unusual triple portrait of Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765- 1815) depicted as the three muses, shown below.
The artist was Irish portrait-painter Hugh Douglas Hamilton (c.1740-1808), no relation of the sitter, and the 14¼ x 17¾in (37 x 45cm) oil on canvas was painted for Emma’s husband Sir William Hamilton. It remained with the family in the Hamilton Palace collection and was consigned by a descendent.
