A cyclops date magnifier, screw-down pushers and the distinctive colour-popping dial with angled subsidiary dials make them instantly recognisable.

The famous 7000 series launched in 1970 is known as the ‘homeplate’ thanks to its hour markers that resemble a baseball homeplate. The 7100 series from the following year was equally quirky with its royal blue ‘roulette wheel’ minute track and came with a new and more sophisticated mechanism – the manually wound Valjoux 234.

This example was offered by Bonhams (27.5/25% buyer’s premium) in London on February 23, selling at £8500.
