From 1885, when the company was founded, until its enforced aryanisation in 1938, the Goldscheider porcelain and majolica factory in Vienna was the leading Austrian producer of figures, masks and lamps, encapsulating the changing fashions of the times.

The firm drew on a multitude of different designers and it is thought that in all it produced over 10,000 different models.

A tiny fraction of these, 36 objects in all, are coming up for sale at Mehlis in Plauen on May 27-29, as part of a collection of late 19th and early 20th century ceramics. Among the most distinctive items is this 3ft 2in (96cm) high lamp Orangepflückerin (Orange Picker), designed by F Gross in about 1902 and manufactured prior to 1920.

It has a starting price of €600.
