He opened Ryedale Retro Antiques, Collectables & Curios Centre last month and has signed up 24 dealers. “It’s a 250-year-old quirky building, a former bakery, and we have five rooms full of Victoriana, retro memorabilia and Americana, plus a dedicated railwayana room,” said Witherington. “We look forward to continuing the success of Pickering Antiques.”

The railwayana room is particularly appropriate given that the centre is a stone’s throw from the station of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a steam heritage line which runs between Pickering and Grosmont. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society was formed in 1967 and the line closed two years earlier reborn.

Elvis in the building

Witherington is president of the Elvis Fan Club in Scarborough which has a collection of ‘The King’ memorabilia and these authenticated Neostyle Nautic sunglasses are for sale at £10,000.

Elvis made these shades famous in 1972 when he appeared wearing them at a legendary performance in Madison Square Garden in New York. The Stamps were Elvis’s gospel group, to whom he gave their own personalised glasses.
