The international art and antiques fair had been moved from March to September this year but the decision has now been taken to cancel the event.
In a statement the organisers said: “After careful consideration of current global circumstances, The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) has made the decision to cancel the in-person component of TEFAF Maastricht 2021.”
TEFAF Online 2021, will run from September 9-13 instead of the physical event.
TEFAF’s ‘in-person’ fairs will resume with “a hybrid fair celebrating TEFAF’s 35th anniversary” next year (March 2022).
Hidde van Seggelen, TEFAF chairman, said: “TEFAF is focused on gathering our community of dealers, collectors, and vendors for our signature fair experience in a physical setting as soon as circumstances allow.
“In the meantime, we are excited to present a new and improved edition of TEFAF Online this September, and look forward to coming together in Maastricht for TEFAF’s 35th anniversary next March.”
Paris fairs return
The 2020 Maastricht fair was cut short over coronavirus concerns.
Despite the TEFAF cancellation in the Netherlands a number of fairs in Paris are currently going ahead.
Fine Arts Paris is to return to the Carrousel du Louvre this autumn (last year it had moved to Dôme des Invalides).
The new dates for a larger format fair (more than 40 stands are booked) are November 6-10.
Also in the French capital, Salon du Dessin has moved its dates and will now be held at the Palais Brongniart on July 1-4. The fair will mark its 30th anniversary with 30 galleries confirmed (below its usual 39 participants).
Earlier this year the new name and dates for a fair to replace the venerable Biennale des Antiquaires were announced.
The new event will be called EX.Paris and will run from November 27-December 5 at the Grand Palais éphémère (a temporary exhibition hall in the Champ de Mars).
