A typical subject for the Jewish-born artist who spent his entire working life in London painting cityscapes of the seemingly mundane, the large 4ft 10in x 6ft 6in (1.47 x 1.98m) oil on board is one of the stars of a new touring retrospective of paintings by Kossoff at Annely Juda Fine Art in London, Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York and LA Louver in California.
Comprising 58 works, the show is the third collaborative effort on Kossoff by this trio and is billed as “the first posthumous and largest exhibition of the artist’s paintings in a commercial setting to date”. It coincides with the publication of the artist’s catalogue raisonné.
Spanning 60 years, Leon Kossoff: A Life in Painting casts light on some of the key moments in his career. From post-war bomb sites to swimming pools, churches, Underground stations and street life, the paintings chart over half a century of change and development, mostly centred in the London neighbourhoods of Dalston, Willesden, Kilburn and Whitechapel.
The London leg of the show runs simultaneously at Annely Juda Fine Art in Mayfair from September 30-December 4 and Frieze Masters (October 13-17) with prices for the paintings ranging from £150,000-£1.2m.
