In 1851 he took over the workshop his father ran with his partner Stefan Mayerhofer. Some 20 years later he dissolved the partnership and became sole owner. Among the works of art produced in the workshop were snuff boxes with micro-mosaics, harking back to the souvenirs of the Grand Tour.

A pair of 3in (7.5cm) wide vermeil boxes, decorated with a bird’s-eye view of St Peter’s Square and the Forum Romanum respectively, will be on offer at Van Ham in Cologne on November 17-18.

The pair is guided at €20,000-22,000.
