This Carlisle sale was led by a mid-19th century portrait by an unknown artist of Daniel Gurney (1791-1880), the brother of the prison and social reformer Elizabeth Fry. It sold for at £10,000 via thesaleroom.com.
A partner in the family banking business for over 60 years, Gurney wrote several essays on related matters, but was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and produced works relating to his archaeological interests.
