Bid to £3750 in the CBA June 6 timed online auction, this poster colour artwork (above), in which Steve and Mat are attacked by Neolithic cave dwellers, had been produced for a 1966 issue of the weekly comic TV Century 21.
In reporting CBA’s March sale I featured a collection of the first 199 issues of those once very popular, small format, illustrated War Picture Library titles, all of them publisher’s file copies. In this June auction a second, 10-volume set from that same source, comprising issues 296-505, sold at at the same price, £3250, and to the same buyer.
This summer sale’s most expensive lot, at £7800, was a water-damaged 1960 first issue of Amazing Spider Man offered without a reserve.
A 1940 first issue of Pep Comics, graded CGC 6.5, made £4350. ‘The Shield!’, shown above, is the main attraction of that issue, but I did wonder whether ‘Bentley of Scotland Yard’, another named attraction, might not have felt a little out of place in such colourful company.
