The West End play debuted at the Duke of York’s Theatre in December 1904 under the title Peter Pan; or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.

JM Barrie’s famous free-spirited character first appeared in his 1902 novel The Little White Bird which was adapted for the 1904 play. Barrie later expanded the play’s storyline for his familiar 1911 novel Peter and Wendy.

The 20in x 2ft 5in (50 x 75cm) colour printed poster was designed by Charles Buchel (1872-1950), a German-born British artist who worked on many advertising programmes and posters for theatres.

It is available to buy at £2500 from Michael Kemp Bookseller at the PBFA’s York National Book Fair, which returns after its 2020 edition was cancelled to York Racecourse on September 10-11.

Neil Pearson Rare Books, specialist in the inter-war expatriate literary movement in Paris, stands at the fair for the first time alongside regulars Graham York Rare Books, Hyraxia Books, John Atkinson Fine & Rare Books and Peter Harrington among others.
