That lot (previewed in ATG No 2530) was not, however, the most expensive purchase of the day at Comic Book Auctions (20% buyer’s premium).

Though it fell short of expectations in selling at £4150, a “modified” double-page artwork featuring Heros the Spartan that Frank Bellamy produced as the centre spread for a 1965 issue of Eagle comic was bid to £4150.

The auction house noted that the title lettering and some square text boxes seen on the artwork were later additions, but could be removed if required.

Published in 1948, nine of the first 13 issues of Wonderman comic attracted a bid of £1120.

A year of Buster

Shown above is a composite image used in the catalogue to promote a lot that offered a complete set of the 52 issues of Buster for the year 1962.

Billed as the highest-grade set ever seen at auction and complete with all free gifts, among them Buster’s Boomerang and a cut-out flying model of the splendid VC10 jet airliner, it sold for £780.
