Estimated at £5000-8000, it will be offered in Gildings’ Fine Art and Antique auction in Market Harborough on September 6.

Measuring 3ft 8in x 16in (1.12m x 41cm), the modelled frieze was based on the record-breaking lustred vase sold last year at Moreton-in-Marsh saleroom Kinghams for £75,000 (see ATG No 2498) and just one other vase. The former was designed by Forsyth and produced for the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition in London.

The factory thought the design was so good it would be a shame not to make more use of it. So it cast six slabs in plaster and presented them to prominent figures from the factory.

This one comes from family of one of those recipients: Abraham Lomax, chemist at Pilkington’s between 1896-1911 and writer of the early history of the pottery published in 1957. The panel is offered with a signed copy of his book.
