Illustrated here, however, is one of a group of very English comic books of the 1960s that might bring back childhod memories for some of ATG’s older readers.

Twenty-three lots in all presented examples of Commando, a pocket-sized series of pictorially focused tales that launched in 1961.

Seven of the very early issues were offered individually, while others followed in small groups, or in a few cases in lots containing rather larger numbers of issues ‘A Guy needs Guts’, featured here, was only the third issue in the series to appear, in 1961, and it sold at a mid-estimate £130 in this Stourbridge sale, but a copy of issue no 4, ‘Mercy for None!’, almost trebled expectations in reaching £140.
