The firm attended a series of the international exhibitions in the late 19th and early 20th century – including the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St Louis – as it began exporting its range worldwide.
Its market niche was a large range of antique reproductions plus realistically modelled table ornaments formed as birds and animals. Many were imported to the UK via wholesale silver and jewellery firms such as Berthold Muller.
Nine works by Neresheimer & Söhne featured in a ‘silver menagerie’ offered as part of an auction of Selected Silver and Objects of Vertu at Noonans (24% buyer’s premium) in Mayfair on November 29.
The property of a gentleman, the collection numbered more than a dozen Dutch, German and English silver animals from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
