According to the vendor’s family, the painting had been sitting in their uncle’s house for at least 30 years and this was probably the first time it had been seen on the market since it had been acquired by them from the Redfern Gallery in London.

Titled Bird Among Rocks, the 2ft 6in x 2ft 10in (77 x 86cm) signed oil on board was dated 53 and was believed to have been part of the 1953 Redfern Gallery exhibition of works by Michael Ayrton, Graham Sutherland, Michael Rothenstein and Wynter himself.

The estimate of £5000-8000 on November 22 was not deemed excessive by the multiple players in this market who turned out on the day.

With bidding from both the internet and a number of phone lines, it was hammered down at £20,000 to Chelsea dealership Jonathan Clark which represents the Bryan Wynter estate.
