A hand-coloured engraved map, was based principally on documents in the Land Office at Tallahassee by IG Searcy and published by him in collaboration with F Lucas Jnr of Baltimore, it reaches from the Alabama river in the north-west to the Savannah river in Georgia to the east, and terminates at the northern coast of Cuba in the south.
Numerous and substantial land grants are recorded, as are Indian tribal boundary lines. As the largest settlement at the time, the grid of Tallahassee’s streets is presented in an inset.
Folding into marbled boards and a cloth case, the 1.22m (4ft) tall Searcy map is of the utmost rarity.
No copy is recorded at auction since this one was sold as part of the great Streeter collections in 1967, while only three others are noted in US institutional collections.
Showing some spotting, soiling and toning, mostly along the folds and more visible in ocean areas, it is in largely fresh and original condition.
As part of the Jay I Kislak collection being sold to benefit the Kislak family foundation, it realised $35,000 (£29,165) at Doyle (27.5/26/20/14.5% buyer’s premium) in New York.
