Sworders’ Design sale on July 12-13 includes this wallhanging (pictured top) by the weaver Peter Collingwood (1922-2008).
The trademark ‘microgauze’ hanging of woven linen and steel with a label signed and stamped M.92 No.22 is guided at £3000-5000. Based in Colchester for much of his career, Collingwood was at the forefront of weaving for 50 years. His wall hangings, many of them sold at the time through Liberty and Heal’s, use the traditional craft to create very modern visual abstractions.
Sworders has sold several similar pieces in recent years included the example sold for a record £20,000 in the firm’s sale in May.
Easy chair, one of a pair designed by Uno Åhrén - priced at £127,000 by Modernity.
This rosewood and velvet upholstered easy chair was one of a pair designed by Uno Åhrén (1897-1977) and shown in the so-called Ladies’ Salon in the Swedish Pavilion at the L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris in 1925. An architect, community planner and leading exponent of functionalism, Åhrén had made his debut as a furniture designer at Hemutställningen in 1917. This rare chair from the exhibition that gave Art Deco its name is priced at £127,000 by Modernity at Masterpiece London.
Ruby lustre charger by Maw & Co – estimate £3000-5000 at Tennants.
This exceptionally large ruby lustre charger by Maw & Co comes up for sale in Tennants’ 20th Century Design sale in Leyburn on June 25 with an estimate of £3000-5000. The Stag Hunt, depicting a leaping stag against a plant-filled landscape encircled with running hounds, is marked with the Maw & Co camel couchant mark, and the decorator’s initials MJ. The identity of the decorator has been lost to time; however, an MJ – probably the same artist – is listed as an artist working for William De Morgan from 1880.
PH-Bow piano designed by Andreas Christensen Flygler of Copenhagen – priced just under £200,000 Hatchwell Antiques.
Hatchwell Antiques brings this piano designed by Andreas Christensen Flygler of Copenhagen, c.1937, to Masterpiece. Titled PH-Bow, it was one of eight created and is offered for a price of just under £200,000. The instrument has been fully restored and has no ivory keys.
Art Deco satin birch, ebonised and silvered console table made c.1935 by Waring & Gillows - priced at £4650 by Jeroen Markies Art Deco.
Jeroen Markies Art Deco will bring this Art Deco satin birch, ebonised and silvered console table to The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia. Made c.1935 by Waring & Gillows, it is among the designs created for the firm by the Russian-born architect and teacher Serge Ivan Chermayeff (1900-96) who headed the modern furnishings department from 1928-30. It is priced at £4650.
Rosewood Gothic revival table designed by AWN Pugin - priced £90,000 by H Blairman & Sons.
H Blairman & Sons will bring to Masterpiece London this rosewood Gothic revival table designed by AWN Pugin (1812-52). A similar ‘Octagon table’ with the same base is pictured in Pugin’s Gothic Furniture published by Ackermann & Co in 1835 with this fine-quality example probably made the previous year by the Manchester cabinetmaker Edward Hull. He is mentioned on several occasions in Pugin’s diaries for 1835, alongside a Mr Hamilton who may have been Pugin’s client. Formerly in the John Scott (1935-2020) collection, the price is £90,000.
