Watercolours, ink washes, pencil drawings and lithographs by the artist amassed in a single private collection comprise the Suffolk show, which opens on March 19.

Herman was a Polish-Jewish artist, born in Warsaw. He attended the Warsaw School of Art before fleeing to Britain in 1940 to escape persecution. After living in Glasgow he moved to Ystradgynlais in the Welsh Valleys in 1944 where he was dubbed ‘Joe Bach’ (Little Joe).

In 1943 he exhibited at the Lefevre Gallery alongside LS Lowry. Today, the National Museum in Wales holds many of his works in its collection. Though he eventually settled in London, his depictions of miners, such as the one pictured here, reflect his interest in Welsh society.

It is available for £2400.
