It was created in 1918 by the designer Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill for the Wiener Werkstätte. He had studied at the Viennese Arts and Crafts School under Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser, later taking up a position as a teacher at the school.

In 1907, he joined the staff of the Wiener Werkstätte and three years later took charge of the fashion department, a position he held until 1922.

Wimmer-Wisgrill designed not only costumes and textiles, but numerous pieces of jewellery, glass, leatherwork and silver. His design for this 4in (10cm) long box can be found in the archives of the Wiener Werkstätte as model number 2884, where it is described as a ‘bonboniere’. It is now being offered without reserve.
