Accompanied by 8pp of text and still in the original cloth folder, this 1839 publication by Dalton of London was sold for £1300 in a March 17 sale held in Crewkerne by Lawrences (25% buyer’s premium).

Other highlights included, at a record £1600, a four-volume first in contemporary half calf of Matthew Gregory Lewis’ Feudal Tyrants; or, The Counts of Carlsheim and Sragans of 1806 and, at £1900, a copy of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

The latter was one of 325 signed, large paper copies in original vellum-backed boards and jacket of a 1926 Macmillan edition that features 41 full-page wood engraved plates plus decorative headpieces by Vivien Gribble.
