Aston Martin Owners Club chrome bar badge dating to c.1927 and a Nürburgring enamel dashboard badge – £450 at Charterhouse.
More recently the Sherborne, Dorset, auction house split the automobilia off into a specialist sale in its own right.
The auction on April 1 included a pair of car badges which belonged to Lt Col Philip Thomson-Walker MBE TD, that passed down through the family after he died in 1993.
An Aston Martin Owners Club chrome bar badge dating to c.1927 was stamped 048 on the back, indicating a very early membership number. Offered with this was a Nürburgring enamel dashboard badge. Dating to c.1930, this is an early badge as the circuit opened only in 1927. It was designed by Karl Kollbach and decorated in green, white and black in the Art Deco style which was all the rage at the time.
It is understood from the family that Thomson-Walker owned an Aston Martin and drove this motor car around the Nürburgring in c.1930, probably receiving the dashboard badge for successfully completing a lap.
Both badges have survived the past 95 years or so in “relatively good condition”, said Charterhouse. Estimated at £100-200, they sold for £450.
Brooklands trio
Three Brooklands vehicle front-grill badges – £460 at Ewbank's.
Guided at £100-150 by Ewbank’s (24% buyer’s premium) but sold for £460 on December 2 was a trio of vehicle front-grill badges (rare Brooklands Committee badge, Toye, Kenning & Spencer; a Brooklands Automobile Racing Club, BARC, Brooklands badge with same design; and a Brooklands Aero-Club badge).
