Arlequin Couché measures 6in high x 11½in wide (15 x 29cm) including the base. It has a provenance to Wildenstein Gallery, New York; Betty Parsons, New York; a private collection, New York, acquired in the 1950s-60s, thence by descent in the family.
The work is recorded in the Zadkine Research Center’s catalogue and is accompanied by a digital certificate of authenticity from the Center dated October 20, 2020 (available on request). Estimated at $8000-12,000 in the saleroom at Mamoroneck, New York, it sold for $13,000 (£11,610).
Also on offer was the Belgian artist Constant Permeke’s (1886-1952) 16in (41cm) high carved wood seated cat which is signed on the side. It made $8000 (£7140) against an estimate of $2000-3000.
