Conran collection comes to saleroom

A collection of items from Barton Court, the home of the late Sir Terence Conran (1931-2020), is coming to auction at Bonhams in December.

Design guru Conran, known for his retail businesses Habitat and The Conran Shop, lived in the Berkshire house for more than 40 years.

Among the items to be offered at the December 14 sale at Bonhams in New Bond Street will be furniture, art and Conran’s wine collection from his cellar.

The auction house boss aged just 22

Felix Turner has launched Wimbledon Auctions.

A new auction house is opening in south London this month.

Wimbledon Auctions will focus on general antiques and collectables with some specialist areas including paintings, textiles and natural history.

Felix Turner, 22, will hold his first auction on October 10 at the new premises at Wimbledon Stadium Business Centre on Riverside Road with sales held on the second Monday of each month.

Turner graduated from university in Bristol in June 2021 with a history degree and worked at BCVA (Bristol Commercial Valuers and Auctioneers) during term time and at Lots Road Auctions during holidays. For the past year he has worked at Lots Road and decided now was the time to set up on his own.

He said he has had “a strong interest in antiques since childhood”, collecting and selling stamps and visiting fairs, and has family in the trade.

Turner wi ll value consignments himself and work with some consultants on an ad hoc basis.

Tennants brings a touch of colour

Tennants Auctioneers will hold its third loan exhibition this month: The Art of Colour.

Artists represented in the exhibition are all known for their use of colour, and will include George Romney, Joseph Wright of Derby, Anish Kapoor, William Nicholson, Bridget Riley and Pierre-August Renoir.

The exhibition will be held in Tennants’ The Garden Rooms venue in Leyburn, close to its saleroom and is open daily from October 14-18.

Phillips partners with Chinese firm

Phillips has agreed a tie-up with Chinese auction house Yongle.

The agreement means the two auction houses will partner on upcoming 20th century and Contemporary art and design auctions in Hong Kong and Beijing this autumn.

Phillips’ planned 20th century, Contemporary art and Design day and evening sales in Hong Kong will now be in partnership with Yongle to allow “Yongle’s collectors to participate”. The auctions are on November 30-December 1.

Then in Beijing in early December Yongle’s Global Vision – Modern & Contemporary art evening sale in Beijing will be put together by Yongle in partnership with Phillips.

This is the first time Phillips has been involved in an auction in mainland China.

Last year the firm, which has its London headquarters in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, announced plans for a new head office and saleroom in Asia in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong. It will relocate its Asia headquarters to the WKCDA Tower next spring, featuring over 50,000 sq ft of space over six floors.

Phillips held its first auction in Hong Kong in December 2015.

Soho art dealer Edmunds dies, 79

Andrew Edmunds, prints and drawings dealer and restaurateur of Soho, London, has died aged 79. He was a frequent exhibitor at many London fairs such as Frieze Masters and the London Original Print Fair. Recently he had loaned Hogarth prints from his personal collection to the Hogarth and Europe exhibition at Tate Britain. ATG understands that the business will continue.
