David Bomberg's view of Cuenca Cathedral in Spain – estimate £200,000-300,000 at Dreweatts.
They include this view of Cuenca Cathedral in Spain set high on the edge of a ravine. Enthralled by its dramatic location, Bomberg executed a number of these views, all energetically worked, with this example leading the group at Dreweatts estimated at £200,000-300,000.
The private collection of 14 paintings was produced by the Whitechapel Boys artist between 1922-48.
Six were acquired by one of Bomberg’s patrons, Jewish engineer Arthur Abraham Stambois, and were sold as a collection to Canadian screenwriter Stanley Mann in 1961. They have remained in private hands since then and are projected to fetch over £1m in Dreweatts’ sale of Modern & Contemporary Art on October 19.
Other landscape subjects include Palestine, Cyprus, Petra in Jordan and Ronda, as well as London’s East End. There are also five portraits, including a selfportrait estimated at £15,000-25,000.
