An Alfie Conn match-worn jersey from Rangers’ 1972 European Cup Winners Cup triumph over Dynamo Moscow – estimate £15,000-20,000 at McTear’s.

A match-worn jersey from Rangers’ 1972 European Cup Winners Cup triumph over Dynamo Moscow is guided at £15,000-20,000 in McTear’s sporting memorabilia sale in Glasgow on October 14.

Worn by midfielder, Alfie Conn, it is the first jersey from that match to come to auction

Following wins against Rennes, Sporting Club, Torino and Bayern Munich, Rangers secured the trophy with a 3-2 victory in a packed Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona on May 24 that year.

After narrow defeats in the same competition in 1961 and 1967, it was to be third time lucky for the Ibrox side, with a goal from Colin Stein and two from Willie Johnston.

Midfielder Conn (b 1952) played a pivotal role in the match, as he did on so many occasions during his time at the club between 1968-74, earning him a place in the Rangers Hall of Fame.

The jersey went from Conn to the Louden Tavern in Glasgow, where it was on display behind the bar for a number of years. It is now offered from a private collection of Rangers match-worn shirts.

A 108-piece flatware service by Tiffany – estimate £40,000-60,000 at Bonhams.

The sale of Silver and Objects of Vertu at Bonhams Knightsbridge on October 20-21 includes a remarkable 108-piece flatware service by Tiffany. Each piece is acid-etched, engraved and enamelled in the Japanese style with naturalistic flowers.

The so-called ‘Lap-Over-Edge’ design, created by Charles Grosjean for Tiffany & Co in 1880, was among the firm’s most opulent output with this service seemingly a custom-made order from c.1891. Realistic studies of daffodils, snowdrops, delphiniums, thistles, roses and lilacs grace every handle. It matches another service discussed in William Hood’s Tiffany Silver Flatware, 1845-1905, which was ordered as a wedding present for Mary Louise Easton of La Crosse, Wisconsin, by her parents in 1891.

Which phenomenally wealthy individual ordered this discovery is unknown but it comes by descent from the family of department store owner Nathan Ohrbach (1885-1972). He and his wife Tillie, who doubtless loved the service because of the monogrammed T to each piece, appear to have acquired it as business boomed in the late 1920s.

Consigned to Bonhams via an email enquiry, it has an estimate of £40,000-60,000.
