An early 20th century diamond and platinum ring formerly the property of Mrs Flora Abraham Sassoon (1856-1936) is to be sold by Noonans on September 13.
At the Mayfair firm’s sale of Jewellery, Watches and Objects of Vertu it is estimated to fetch £20,000-30,000.
Flora was the first Jewish woman to lead a global business. In 1894, when her husband Solomon died, she took over his duties at the Bombay branch of David Sassoon & Co. She moved to London with her three children in 1896, taking up residence at 32 Bruton Street, and quickly became one of London’s most sought-after society hostesses.
At her time of death, her personal effects in London were recorded as being worth £140,335 3s.10d.
The ring was passed by family descent to the current vendors.

Marble allegorical ‘janus’ bust – estimated at £1000-2000 at Catherine Southon.
The sale held by Catherine Southon at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey on September 14 includes this weathered 2ft 8in (81cm) marble allegorical ‘janus’ bust carved with the two-faces of Prudence from the cardinal virtues. Possibly 16th or 17th century Italian, it comes for sale from a private source where it had been displayed in a garden.

A unique private day by day diary covered in paintings and sketches by Major Thomas Robert Swinburne dating from 1884 is for sale at Lockdales on September 14-15.
Starting on January 1, it covers his arrival at Suakin on July 15 and continues on to November. It includes mentions of various places, officers, continuous night-time bombardments, information collected by spies and the time an enemy bullet come through his tent only just missing him. It is offered with a separate large scrapbook packed with about 35 original works of art by Swinburne from c.1878 onwards with subjects such as Nicosia, Vigo, Larnaka, Poona, and HMS Achilles.
Swinburne served on HMS Northumberland as a lieutenant and as a captain received the Egypt Medal with Suakin 1885 clasp.
Consigned by descent, the estimate in Ipswich is £1000-1500.

Constance Spry wall pocket – estimated at £2500-3500 at Roseberys.
Roseberys is offering a ‘very substantial and important collection of vases’ by Constance Spry (1886-1960) and other Fulham Pottery designers in the Design Since 1860 sale in West Norwood, south London, on September 14. Many of the works were featured in the exhibition at the Garden Museum in London last year and include designs rarely seen at auction.
Most of the Fulham Pottery in this auction forms part of the private collection of author and Mid-century design specialist, Andrew Weaving. He has written several books on Midcentury design and has amassed this collection of Fulham Pottery over many years.
Shown here is a Constance Spry wall pocket in the form of draped-cloth and tassels, estimated at £2500-3500.

This half-length portrait of a young lady comes up for auction in Cork on September 10.
The painting comes from a house clearance and was originally purchased at the contents sale of Galtee Castle, Co Tipperary which was demolished c.1940. Galtee Castle was built by Abel Buckley MP of Ryecroft Hall near Manchester. On the back is an original label from Thos Agnew & Sons.

The Fine Jewellery & Watches auction on Adam’s in Dublin on September 13 includes this ‘mystery set’ sapphire brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels estimated at €30,000-50,000. Featuring the famous invisible mounting technique the house patented in 1933, the brooch is set with gemstones that look as though they are floating free of confinement. The secret was to cut the stones to small, even pieces that, set in a lattice, would be locked securely in place.
