Inscribed on the mount by the photographer, From life, original photograph copyright Julia Margaret Cameron, June 3rd 1869, the mount also bears the blindstamp of Mess. Colnagni, lower centre.

It has a provenance to Herbert W Fisher (1826-1903), then by descent. The Fisher family provided inspiration for some of Cameron’s best-known images.

Fisher was married to the photographer’s niece, Mary Louisa Jackson (1841-1915), daughter of John Jackson (1804-1887) and Maria TA Pattle (1818-1892), Cameron’s sister. The daughter and sister of Mary Louisa Jackson, Florence H Fisher (1864-1920) and Julia Jackson (1845-1895) respectively, were both favourite subjects for the photographer.
