Guy Peppiatt, St James’s dealer in 18th and 19th century British drawings and watercolours, has two shows showcasing historic views of the British countryside this autumn.
The first proves that buying from an established London dealer need not break the bank. It comprises 55 topographical works by John Pearson (1777-1813), a little-known artist from Ripon.
The large sketchbook sheets include depictions of Yorkshire, Lake District, North Wales, Wrexham, Liverpool, Chester, Shrewsbury, Chepstow, Bristol, York and Durham completed from 1799-1804. The works range from £150-750 unframed.

The artist is known to have been painting at Hawestone Park in Shropshire in about 1804 and is thought to have received tuition from Francis Nicholson who taught in Ripon as a young man. His top recorded price on the open market is £1600 for a watercolour, which went under the hammer at Christie’s in 2000 according to Artprice by Artmarket.
A catalogue for the show, that runs from September 15-23, is available on the website from September 15.
Next up is Views of Nature: Four Centuries of Watercolours from Winchester College. This loan exhibition includes works by Turner, Gainsborough, Girtin, Rowlandson, Munnings, Wright of Derby and many others.
Winchester’s collection boasts 500 works on paper from the 18th to the 20th century. It was started with the benefactions of Harry Collison in 1940 and Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Brook in 1954.
Works are exhibited around the school for short periods at a time and the entire collection is accessible online.
